No quarrel with the practical, legal or the moral arguments made, which have been around now a long while, and seem firmly rooted and demonstrated by numerous people. The problem is whether being correct matters, and which version of correct? There seems to be more than one valid argument about the IT. Mr. Hendrickson himself went to prison, did he not? As did Larken Rose, and he was also right.

Mr. Mottahedeh clearly advises everyone to avoid filing returns at all because by doing so one is agreeing that one is subject to the tax (I think that's his argument), putting themselves voluntarily in their system, jurisdiction. Maybe he's right, too. He hasn't been jailed, but I think he's had some costly battles. You state above that you've just refiled a certain year, so you're not following that path, I guess? Or maybe you are temporarily, in a corrective fashion?

It's a confusing minefield, and a crapshoot. Are you feeling confident at this point interacting with the system in such a way that it does not lead to prison or to liens and levies? Or are you hoping for the best?

Hey, thanks for the comment. You’re asking, basically, what’s the right way through the woods, and does it matter if you go the right way?

Many people have found many ways. Some charge you to be on their path, whether it’s “right” or not. Some sell you an “exit the woods once and for all” document that you send and call it a day. Some people go the wrong way but the troll tasked with pulling the trapdoor was busy taking a leak, so they get through anyway.

Anything that anyone tells you, check and verify. Does Peymon’s advice make sense to you? Does someone having gone to jail in the past scare you away from what they’re putting forth today? Encourage apathy?

Claudette Colvin went to jail too.

What makes it extra confusing is that everyone and their brother has an opinion. You can reduce your confusion by reading the law yourself, as written by Congress. The laws are in your favor, though they may not be always written to be perceived that way at first.

The FTB has threatened to proceed with levy and lien on two penalties they added not provided for by law. Does being right matter? Well, I suppose it depends on the representative who handled my case, the way I wrote my paperwork, and whether you get scared by what comes in the mail from agencies. Not going to do everything perfectly the first time. You’re dealing with agencies full of people just like you with various levels of understanding, just as you have, trying to do the right thing as well.
